Leadership Development Trainer

Michael Smith (Major, retired), joined the Mecklenburg County (NC) Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) in 1993. He retired in 2019 as a Facility Commander and Training Director. He has extensive training and leadership development experience given his role with MCSO.

 

Michael has a Business, Psychology and Counseling degree and is currently obtaining his Masters in Organizational Development and Executive Coaching from Queens University's McColl School of Business in Charlotte, NC. Additionally, he is a graduate of the 251st Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy.

 

While at the FBINA, he was selected by his peers as a section leader.

During his career at he MCSO, Michael also served as a Shift Commander, Field Commander, Assistant Shift Commander and as the Training and Recruiting Commander. During his tenure as the Training and Recruiting Commander, Michael created the Leadership and Command College for MCSO. All personnel from the rank of Field Training Officer to Captain participated in this training which was developed to improve employee engagement and retention by developing  leaders compelled to understand their personal leadership styles and the impact those have on those they lead.

Additionally, Michael has taught Verbal Judo and tactical de-escalation for over 20 years.  He was a contributor to the Mecklenburg County (NC) Crisis Intervention Team as well as a regular contributor to MCSO Recruit training. He also served on the SERT Team, and as a SERT Sniper, Hostage Negotiator, and Direct Action Response Team Commander.

Michael has been a keynote speaker for several associations including the NC Law Enforcement Women’s Association and Mental Health America of the Central Carolina’s. He brings a passion for developing leaders' strengths, emotional intelligence, and he excels in working with leaders to create greater understanding of the impact their actions have on others. His experience and passion creates a powerful and lasting training experience.
