Why Focus on Strengths?

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

When was the last time you left work feeling energized, engaged, and eager to return the next day? If you can’t remember when that last happened, you probably aren’t using your strengths every day. And if I asked you what those were, would you even be able to tell me?

Knowing your strengths and working in an organization that encourages you to use them every day can be life changing!

Approximately 50 years ago, the Gallup organization decided they wanted to look at what was right with people rather than fixating on what was wrong with them. Dr. Don Clifton asked his research team to look at what really makes people successful. Their research showed that when people are able to use their strengths every day, they are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs and report being three times happier in life overall. Can you imagine working in an organization in which everyone is engaged in their work and happy? What impact would that have on your organization? Your leaders? Your employees? On YOU?

Gallup created the Clifton StrengthsFinder® assessment to help people understand their talents and how those talents show up in their lives. To date, over 21 million people worldwide have taken the assessment and now know the strengths they bring to their jobs and what they need from their jobs and from their leaders. Gallup research shows that organizations that are focused on strengths have greater employee engagement, greater productivity, and greater profitability.
